In the present investigation, Lanthanide oxide particles (CeO2 and Nd2O3) were used as dispersed phases. Composite coatings in a cobalt and a nickel matrix were obtained by electrodeposition from acidic plating electrolytes. The zeta potential and the size of the particles were characterized by light scattering. The aim was to learn more about the behaviour of the nanoparticles in the electrolyte and during the electrocodeposition processes. The structure of composite coatings was observed using SEM and AFM techniques. The addition of CeO2 and Nd2O3 particles induces a change of the microstructure and the surface morphology of the metal matrix. The correlation between the electroplating parameters (e.g. current density, electrolyte composition) and the obtained dispersion coatings will be discussed. Special regard was given to the corrosion behavior and the mechanical properties (e.g. microhardness) of the composite coatings. |
