High-energy X-ray scattering, a tool to probe short-range order in amorphous alloys

The talk will be divided into two parts. Firstly, I will briefly present the high-energy (53 keV to 145 keV) X-ray beamline 12-JEEP situated at Diamond Light Source, the UK national synchrotron facility, as a versatile instrument for material science combining X-ray scattering and imaging techniques. In the second part, I will focus on the using the total (X-ray) scattering analysis to reveal a short-range order in highly disordered systems and amorphous metallic materials known as metallic glasses (MGs). A few examples will be presented such as an in-situ study of the Invar effect in Fe-based bulk MGs, an in-situ study of nanocrystallisation of Fe-based MGs and a detailed short-range order characterisation of binary Cu-Hf MGs.
