Quantum error correction for near-term devices

Quantum computers promise a exponential speed up over their classical counterparts for certain problems, but this is threatened by the extreme susceptibility of the quantum state to noise. Detection and correction of errors in digital quantum systems is possible, but the large overhead required to do this makes it a formidable challenge. Nethertheless, near term devices are poised to break through this barrier, paving the way for scalable error corrected systems. In this talk, I will outline the current experimental efforts towards quantum error correction, and the theory development supporting this.
